Who was Steve Uliss?
He developed his passion for food early, working at his grandfather’s deli and excelling in culinary arts. After completing a fast-track culinary program at Johnson & Wales University, Steve worked at high-end restaurants, eventually transitioning to leadership roles at Barnsider Management.
His interest in BBQ grew after attending the “Memphis in May” World Championship Barbecue Cookoff, where he became hooked on the art of smoking meats. Mentored by BBQ legend John Willingham, Steve competed nationwide and returned to New England to introduce authentic BBQ, winning local and national competitions.
In the early 2000s, Steve opened Firefly’s BBQ, offering a blend of Southern-style BBQ and comfort foods. The restaurant also featured a nightclub, Dante’s, and a seasonal outdoor space, The Backyard, offering live music alongside his acclaimed cuisine.
Over time, Firefly’s BBQ became the largest BBQ caterer in New England, with a fleet of trucks and catering services for large events. Steve’s BBQ team has earned numerous national awards for their signature smoked meats and homemade sauces, solidifying Firefly’s as a BBQ destination.
