Who was Toni Price?
Born in Philadelphia as Luiese Esther in 1961, she adopted the name Toni and began her music career in Nashville before moving to Austin in 1989, where she became a staple in the city’s blues scene.
Price gained recognition for her honeyed alto voice and 30-year residency at the Continental Club, where she hosted the popular “Hippie Hour.” Known as the “Juke Joint Madonna,” she never sought songwriting fame, instead collaborating with notable artists like Gwil Owens.
Over her career, she earned 12 Austin Music Awards and was inducted into the Austin Music Hall of Fame in 2017. Price was also an outspoken figure, voicing her criticisms of the music industry, particularly in regard to underpaid artists. Her family requests memorial donations be made to Hospice Austin’s Christopher House. A tribute show is set to be announced.
